Tooth Sensitivity needs no introduction. It\u2019s the frustrating, sudden & sharp pain that many people experience usually upon eating or drinking something sweet, cold, sour or hot. Not just eating & drinking though, activities such as brushing and flossing can trigger the pain too. Sensitivity can affect one or more teeth. It has multiple causes and they are listed below.<\/p>\r\n

1. Brushing teeth too hard or using a hard-bristled brush can wear away the enamel, i.e., the hard, protective tissue that covers the tooth. This exposes the dentin, the soft, main layer and affects the nerves coming from the dental pulp<\/strong><\/em><\/a><\/u> whenever something hot or cold is consumed, thereby causing sensitivity. (The pulp is the tissue consisting of living connective tissue and blood vessels.)<\/p>\r\n

2. A wrong brushing technique, leading to the erosion of enamel can also cause sensitivity.<\/p>\r\n

3. Acidity. Medical issues such as acid reflux<\/strong><\/a><\/em><\/u> can wear down enamel, leading to tooth sensitivity and discolouration.<\/p>\r\n

4. Tartar buildup is another cause.<\/p>\r\n

5. Tooth decay near the gum line and untreated cavities.<\/p>\r\n

Patients often think that replacing their toothpaste with one of those that claim to treat sensitive teeth would help, but it does not. The only person who can help you is your dentist.<\/p>\r\n
